Call for Host Hubs – Studio 1

Studio 1 visits ‘Host Hubs’- schools and colleges – for a week at a time to engage learners, predominately from Year 10 through to 13 (ages 14 to 18+). The programme is keen to engage with as many schools and colleges as possible during Studio 1’s visit. As such, in collaboration with the Host Hub, NMiTE also invite neighbouring educational institutions to participate in the programme for a day each. Studio 1 accommodates only eight learners at a time – hence chosen participants are provided with a unique experience.

Studio 1 provides a focus for engaging young people and the community with an experience of studying towards a career in engineering at NMiTE through the exploration of ideas, design and making in a very practical sense. The programme aims to engage students from a range of disciplines ie not only Physics, Design and Technology, and Engineering with the aim of broadening the type of young person able to consider engineering as a course of study.

Using pedagogy developed by NMiTE’s educators, Ingenuity Studio staff facilitate in day-long ‘Sprints’ – creative problem-solving workshops through teamwork. The Ingenuity Studio programme reflects NMiTE’s unique approach to teaching and learning with an emphasis on collaboration and idea development. Importantly we create the environment and structures for young people to successfully communicate, think and evaluate together.

In discussion with the Host Hub, we develop a bespoke itinerary to meet their needs against the programme’s aims. Various activities offered are centered on Studio 1 – the high-tech refurbished shipping container can accommodate up to eight students at a time. Sprints last one full day where students address a real-world engineering challenge or a Toolkit which focuses on skills development. We have introduced an ‘Ingenuity Flash’ – a full lesson-length introduction to the world of Engineering for the benefit of additional learners at the Host Hub. In order to further reach, hosts are invited to arrange a visit to Studio 1 from a local feeder Primary Schools during the week-long visit.

In discussion with the Host Hub, the team invite neighbouring schools/colleges in the area to participate in one day-long Sprint.  With a commitment to furthering their learning, participants benefit from a certificate and are able to reference the opportunity in their growing Curriculum Vitae.

Whilst at the Host Hub we also offer engagement in the classroom and presentations at assemblies from NMiTE staff as well as arranging visits from Engineers. The Ingenuity Studio team recognise the central role educators and parents/carers have in young peoples’ career choices.  As such, during the week’s visit we offer CPD for teachers, technicians and careers advisors and an open studio for parents/carers, both as after-school events which we offer to all schools/colleges engaging in the studio during its visit.

Studio 1’s Spring/Summer geographical remit is in a 40-mile radius of Hereford. Its programme see visits to the following Host Hub Secondary Schools (KS3 and KS4 and some KS5) in both England and Wales including: John Beddoes Campus, Newtown High School, Presteigne; Lady Hawkins’ School, Kington; Brecon High School; Gwernyfed High School, Three Cocks; Earl Mortimer College, Leominster; Christopher Whitehead Language College, Worcester; Royal Grammar School Worcester and John Masefield High School, Ledbury. We have been over-whelmed by the enthusiasm and interest in NMiTE with schools keen to take up the opportunity and are particularly supportive in broaden the type of student who may consider engineering as a career.

In order to further the programme’s reach, Studio 1 will also be hosted at a number of cultural and sporting events including: IoT Lab, The Courtyard Centre for the Arts, Hereford; Hay Festival, Hay-on-Wye; Royal Three Counties Show, Malvern; The Royal Welsh Show, Builth Wells. See our programme page specific dates.
